The very first new release we ever covered on The New Curious City was “Joyride.” We <3 The Backfires. Now, the boys from both sides of the Atlantic are back for more with revved-up 2000’s rock riffs fit for these new roaring 20s.
“Brighter Lights” feels like being thrown into a rock club. The pulsating guitars light up the room and Alex Gomez takes the mic. It’s wild how electric they can get their music to sound and just tells me The Backfires are here for BRAT summer.
Something in the guitar strikes me in a similar vein to The Killers or maybe… “Brooklyn Bridge To Chorus” off of The New Abnormal (2020). It’s really wonderful to see how their influences of The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Interpol, Catfish and the Bottleman, Inhaler, and The Backseat Lovers come to life… but once you get to the chorus, it’s undeniable- this is The Backfires.
The call into the chorus is entrancing and what follows is nothing short of glorious: from its ravy guitars to the pumped up rhythm and of course, Gomez’s performance as frontman- claiming to be “doin’ just enough to be getting by.”
It’s jet engines. Max Wanduragala pounds the drums into dust and shimmery vox dazzle in the mix. There’s a crunch of gain and the song is rocketing off again, with Matt Walter letting loose on the bass.
Harry Ruprecht rips a classic killer solo and the whole band strikes up one last time as Alex takes the track home with a fire outro. They close out with a final riff and then it’s curtains. So yeah, this new track from The Backfires is a banger.

And what’s this? I’m hearing there’s beef between them and Cry Baby??
