Two weeks back on April 27th, LAYNE & NUFFER dropped an indie rock banger that’s sure to hit your playlists. Guitar strumming that sounds like clockwork kicks off the track and NUFFER lays down some computerized vocals. Soon enough, LAYNE joins in and the track begins its trek towards coalescence.
Layne self describes their soundscape as “the In-between” and that’s what we get on this track. The song feels like a sci-fi hit ripped out of the year 2072, as “Penny” phases between flickers of shoegaze and hyperpop production; it’s the perfect soundtrack to your cityscape freerunning.
In a flash of guitar, the listener is flung into the deep end with a drop reminiscent of “Talk” by Beabadoobee. While LAYNE delivers swishing vocal lines, the guitar washes back and forth and the track spins into a whirlpool of digitized sounds.
Throughout the song we get lyrics about feeling out of place and how the world screwed this girl “Penny” over. We hear LAYNE & NUFFER sing “Maybe she’ll come around / Maybe it settles down next year.”
The clearest picture comes with the chorus:
“Penny’s a nice girl.
Letting them take what she’d give to herself
It’s so romantic
Giving the whole world to everyone else”
This repeats again next chorus but this time around she breaks off into repeatedly singing,
“I THINK I’VE HAD ENOUGH”
The track makes use of the Pixies’ age old “loud quiet loud” method, turning down to a quiet pre-chorus before blasting off into a final climax.
“Penny’s a sweet girl
Letting them take what she’d give to herself
It gets harder to fake it.
IS IT WORTH IT IN THE END?
SHE GAVE IT ALL! THERE’S NOTHING LEFT!”
With this the song explodes into wild guitar lines and the only lyric left to sing is:
“I THINK I’VE HAD ENOUGH” (x6)
