There’s something amazing about listening to perfectly produced indie pop. Charleston turned New York indie rockers Cry Baby have that sound on lock. Their newest EP, In Love Without You, will take you on a throwback to the days of spotless y2k pop production a la *NSYNC and Britney Spears.
In Love Without You is electric from its opening moments, zipping around through static guitars on “One Thing.” Suddenly, you’re in the most danceable chorus of Brat Summer 2024.
From here we’re whisked away to “Hollister,” where we experience a blissful reverb in music made for motion- this becomes ever so evident at a Cry Baby live show.
“Pretend” leads us softly through an enchanting acoustic melody, slowing the pacing for a little and showcasing Cry Baby’s more sensitive side. The track blooms into a beautiful chorus as vocal lines flourish and fade.
“Best Shot” is transcendental, lifting their voices to angelic tones as they shine on in heavenly sounds. It’s another nice moment of reflection amidst a mostly in your face and fast-paced project.
My personal favorite cut from the EP is track 5, “The Show.” The guitar lines on this rip through the vortex of polished indie pop production, blasting us out of supercharged verses into perfect choruses. There’s always something happening in the track as it spins in your headphones alongside vocal cuts and sparks of guitar. Cry Baby is a #rockband.
It’s pop choruses, it’s rock riffs, it’s beautiful production, it’s thoughtful lyricism, it’s the best new band in NYC.
